Cookie policy

FeedAtom keeps you signed in and remembers your settings with a few necessary cookies. It counts visits anonymously, without cookies, and - only with your permission - uses analytics tools that do set cookies.

Who sets them

FeedAtom sets the cookies on this site. With your permission, the analytics providers named below set their own.

What we set

A session cookie holding your signed-in session, a preferences cookie remembering your theme and density, and a consent cookie remembering the choice you made about cookies. The session cookie is httpOnly and first-party, and it expires when your session does. All three are strictly necessary, so no law requires us to ask permission for them.

How we measure visits

Every visit is counted by Rybbit, which we run on our own servers. It sets no cookie and stores nothing in your browser, it does not keep your IP address, and the code that tells one visit from another changes every day, so it cannot follow you from one day to the next. It sees the page you opened, the site that sent you and your kind of device - never who you are. It runs whether or not you accept cookies, because it sets none. If you choose "Accept all", we may also use Microsoft Clarity, Google Analytics or PostHog on this site; they set their own cookies to show us how pages are used, and none of them starts before you choose. Cookie settings, at the bottom of every page, lists exactly which of them run here. There are no advertising cookies, and we never sell or share what we learn.

What happens in the emails we send

A digest contains a small image that loads when your mail program displays the message, which is how we know it arrived and was opened, and its links pass through us on their way to the publisher, which is how we know a story was worth reading. We use this to stop sending to addresses that bounce and to improve ranking in aggregate. It is measurement, not advertising, and it is never sold or shared. You can turn it off in your delivery preferences, or block remote images in your mail program, and the digest will still arrive.

Third parties

Signing in sends you to our identity provider, which sets its own cookie on its own domain to remember that you signed in there. That is governed by its own policy, not this one. Clicking a story link takes you to the publisher's site, which is governed by theirs.

Your control

Choose Cookie settings at the bottom of any page to change your answer; the tools that need your permission stop as soon as you withdraw it. Your browser can also block or clear cookies for this site at any time. Blocking the session cookie means you cannot sign in; everything a signed-out visitor can read stays readable.

Changes

When we add a cookie or a measurement tool, this page changes first and the banner asks you again.
